  63. INSTALLATION:
  64. =============
  65.     To install this blackjack game from the distribution diskette, simply
  66.     copy the file "ULTIMA.EXE" to the desired directory ("\ULTIMA21" 
  67.     suggested) on your hard disk and run the program. 
  68.  
  69.     This is a self-extracting packed file and running it will unpack all
  70.     the needed files and programs. Once self-extraction is complete, this 
  71.     file can be removed. However, you should always retain a copy of this 
  72.     file on diskette or tape just in case you need to reload it in the 
  73.     future. 
  74.  
  75.     NOTE: If you obtained a copy of this game from Compuserve or Ziff-Net,
  76.     the file VBRUN300.DLL WAS NOT INCLUDED in the packed file ULTIMA.EXE.

  78.     This file is the Visual Basic Runtime Library (DLL) of routines for 
  79.     all programs written in Visual Basic Version 3.0. Once you have this
  80.     file on    your computer, all programs (not just those from us) written
  81.     in Visual Basic 3.0 can access and use this file. Place this file in
  82.     the windows system directory for all Visual Basic Programs to use it.
  83.     This directory is called \WINDOWS\SYSTEM and just place the 
  84.     VBRUN300.DLL file in there.

  86.     This was done to save download time and related costs. Actually,
  87.     CompuServe, Ziffnet, America On-Line, Prodigy, and other BBS systems
  88.     WILL NOT LET US include this file in our package for you to download.
  89.     The file VBRUN300.DLL is available in most BBS forums -- check with 
  90.     your forum's Sysop or search the BBS files by name for VBRUN300.DLL.

  92.     Some BBS store this file as VBRUN3.ZIP. Try looking for this file with
  93.     a wild card search such as VBRUN*.*. It is on the service somewhere,
  94.     so do not give up looking. Remember, you are looking for the Visual
  95.     Basic Version 3.0 Runtime Library DLL.

  97.     There have been 3 versions of the Visual Basic Runtime DLL so far.
  98.     The first was version 1 and was called VBRUN100.DLL. The next was
  99.     version 2 and was called VBRUN200.DLL. The current version is
  100.     VBRUN300.DLL and THIS IS THE REQUIRED RUNTIME FILE for this program
  101.     to operate. Be sure to download and use this file!!
  102.  
  103.     If a message appears asking you whether or not you wish to replace an
  104.     existing file in the ULTIMA21 directory, answer with a "Y". DO NOT USE
  105.     OLD FILES WITH A NEW VERSION - FATAL ERRORS WILL RESULT.

  107.     To start the blackjack game, run the file ULTIMA21.EXE from Windows
  108.     File Manager.
  109.  
  110.     The icon file ULTIMA21.ICO contains the icon for you to use if you wish
  111.     to add Ultima 21 Blackjack for Windows (tm) to your Games Program Group
  112.     or set one up just for this game. Please see the Windows Users Manual 
  113.     for instructions on adding Program Items and setting up Program    Groups
  114.     from the Program Manager. Also, the help file (ULTIMA21.HLP) that comes
  115.     with this game also provides step-by-step instructions for setting up
  116.     Program Groups and Items in Windows.

  118.     This program was written in Visual Basic V3.0 and REQUIRES the
  119.     following files:  VBRUN300.DLL (normally included), QCARD.DLL
  120.     (included), FXTOOLS.DLL (included), QPRO200.DLL (included),
  121.     BSISOUND.DLL (included), MHDES200.DLL (included), MHRUN200.DLL 
  122.     (included), CSGROUP.VBX (included) FXIMAGE.VBX (included), 
  123.     FXLABEL.VBX (included), MHMQ200.VBX (included), RSW31.DLL (included).
  124.     Be sure these files are all located in the directory where you loaded
  125.     and unzipped ULTIMA.EXE.

  127.     NOTE: Occasionally, Microsoft will release an updated VBRUN300.DLL
  128.     file which will correct some bugs in their runtime modules. You 
  129.     should periodically compare the date/time/size of this file to the
  130.     latest one available on CompuServe in the Microsoft MBASIC+ Forum.
  131.     If a later one is released, please download it and place it in the 
  132.     ULTIMA21 directory. Ultima 21 Blackjack for Windows (tm) will use it
  133.     automatically from then on.  
  134.  
  135. PLACEMENT OF VBRUN300.DLL
  136. =========================
  137.     As with most Windows programs, the main program looks for its needed
  138.     DLL and VBX files in the same directory as the ULTIMA21.EXE file. If
  139.     it cannot find them there, it looks into the default Windows system
  140.     directory called \WINDOWS\SYSTEM. If it cannot locate the file it
  141.     needs, it issues an error message stating it cannot locate or find
  142.     the needed file.
  143.  
  144.     You have two choices for loading the VBRUN300.DLL runtime library file.
  145.     Placing it in Ultima 21's directory will allow Ultima 21 to find it but
  146.     no other Visual Basic programs can. Placing it here makes it easy to 
  147.     keep track of all of Ultima 21's programs and files for easy uninstall.
  148.     However, you may end up with multiple copies of this same file all over
  149.     System (one for each Visual Basic 3.0 program).
  150.  
  151.     Most people will place this file into the Windows System directory
  152.     (\WINDOWS\SYSTEM) so all Visual Basic 3.0 applications and programs 
  153.     can find it. This way, you only need 1 copy of this file on your 
  154.     computer system. The choice is yours - either way Ultima 21 will
  155.     function correctly.

  202.  
  203. BASIC OPERATION:
  204. ===============
  205.     Ultima 21 Blackjack is a true windows application which can be run and
  206.     controlled by you just like any other windows application.
  207.  
  208.     When first loaded, Ultima 21 Blackjack will display its opening window
  209.     while it initializes itself. Next a photo of the Casino will appear. 
  210.  
  211.     Shortly after that, the Casino's Manager will appear and ask you to 
  212.     enter your name and then he will take you to a blackjack table. 
  213.  
  214.     When Ultima 21 starts, it will load a file called "ULTIMA21.DEF" as
  215.     the default table rules, player names, playing strategy, and other
  216.      environment variables. If it cannot find this file, it will use its
  217.     own pre-programmed default settings. See the next section for more 
  218.     information regarding saving/restoring games and the default settings.
  219.  
  220.     Next, Ultima 21 Blackjack will attempt to load the file ULTIMA21.CNT 
  221.     from disk. This file contains custom card count settings and will
  222.     override those stored and loaded from the defaults file ULTIMA21.DEF.
  223.     These count settings control the calculation of the running count, 
  224.     the true count, and the user count. If this file cannot be loaded,
  225.     Ultima 21 Blackjack will use its own pre-programmed card count 
  226.     settings.
  227.  
  228.     Finally, Ultima 21 Blackjack will attempt to load the default playing
  229.     strategy file called ULTIMA21.SGY. This file controls how Auto Play,
  230.     Auto Help, and Auto Focus operate. This file contains a set of 
  231.     playing option strategies (hit, stand, double, split) that should 
  232.     be made based on the dealer's up card and the player's current hand. 
  233.  
  234.     When the blackjack table is first displayed, you will notice several
  235.     buttons at the bottom of the screen. Some of which will be disabled
  236.     (grayed out) and some of which will be enabled. At the start of a
  237.     new hand, the DEAL button will be the default button and should be
  238.     used to deal the next hand. To deal, move the mouse pointer to the
  239.     DEAL button and press the left mouse button.
  240.     
  241.     The other buttons will be enabled/disabled depending on what is
  242.     happening at the table. For example: the DOUBLE button will only be 
  243.     enabled when a player's hand is such that a double down is allowed. 
  244.     The same is true for the SPLIT and SURRENDER buttons as well. The
  245.     status of these two buttons is determined based on the double down 
  246.     and split rules for the table and on the cards currently dealt to
  247.     the player.
  248.  
  249.     The HIT and STAND buttons are always enabled during a hand. The HIT
  250.     button will deal one card to the player. The STAND button will tell 
  251.     the dealer the current player's hand is done and play will transfer
  252.     to the next player's hand. If there is not a next player, control
  253.     will transfer to the dealer's hand. 
  254.  
  255.     The DOUBLE button will allow the player to double his/her bet and 
  256.     receive one card and one card only. Play will then transfer to
  257.     the next player's hand. There are several double down rules you
  258.     can customize and control.
  259.  
  260.     The SPLIT button will break up a pair into two hands. This is normally
  261.     allowed on like pairs (8 and 8 or A and A) or on a pair of face cards
  262.     (J and Q). When a hand is split, one card is moved to second hand
  263.     (split hand) and the player must match the bet of the original hand. 
  264.     There are several splitting and resplitting rules you can customize
  265.     and control.
  266.  
  267.     The other buttons on the screen and their functions are:
  268.  
  269.         BETS:   will prompt you for each player's bet and is available
  270.             only at the start of a new hand.
  271.  
  272.         SHUFFLE: will reshuffle the deck before the next hand. 
  273.  
  274.         PEEK:   will allow you to peek (view) the next few cards to be 
  275.             dealt.
  276.  
  277.         STRATEGY: will access the Playing Strategy Window where you
  278.             may view, change, save, or load the playing strategy
  279.             for this table. The playing strategy is used in 
  280.             conjunction with the automatic decision help. 
  281.  
  282.             A playing strategy consists of hit, stand, double, 
  283.             and split rules for a player's hand based on what the
  284.             dealer is showing in his hand. 
  285.  
  286.         EXIT:   will allow you quit playing Ultima 21 Blackjack.
  287.  
  288.         SPEED:  will access the Set Game Speed Window which allows you
  289.             to control how fast the cards are dealt by the dealer.
  290.  
  291.         STATS:  will display the current playing statistics for each
  292.             player and for the dealer.
  293.  
  294.         COUNT:  will display the current card counts. This shows the
  295.             number of cards dealt (ace, two, three...) as well as 
  296.             other card counting information. 
  297.  
  298.             In ULTIMA 21 PRO BLACKJACK, you have the ability to
  299.             build and customize your own card counting systems.
  300.  
  301.         SAVE:   will save the current game to disk.
  302.  
  303.         HINT:   will display a window that displays the correct play
  304.             (hit, stand, double, split) based on the current 
  305.             playing strategy in effect. 
  306.             
  307.         REDRAW: updates the playing table and redraws all controls,
  308.             cards, and messages.                   
  309.  
  310. SAVING & USING THE GAMES DEFAULT SETTINGS:
  311. ========================================
  312.     Ultima 21 Blackjack allows you to customize the table rules, number of
  313.     players, bank balances, playing strategy, etc... Once you have the
  314.     game set up how you like to play, you may save all the current 
  315.     settings as the "defaults" for a new game. 
  316.  
  317.     THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE DEFAULT SETTINGS FILE -- please see the 
  318.     SAVE/RESUME section below for information on saving/restoring
  319.     multiple games. 
  320.  
  321.     To do so, click on the FILE menu & select the SAVE SETTINGS AS DEFAULT
  322.     option. This will save the current settings into a disk file called 
  323.     "ULTIMA21.DEF". Each time a new game is started, Ultima 21 Blackjack
  324.     will read this file and set itself up according to what was saved in
  325.     this file. 
  326.  
  327.     Note: in order for Ultima 21 Blackjack to locate and load this file 
  328.     automatically, it must reside in the same directory as Ultima 21.
  329.     If Ultima 21 cannot find this file, it will revert back to its 
  330.     "factory" or internal settings.
  331.  
  332. ERRORS AT STARTUP
  333. =================
  334.     If you encounter either of the following two errors at startup:
  335.  
  336.         1) "OVERFLOW"
  337.         2) "Invalid Control Index"
  338.  
  339.     then the startup files (ULTIMA21.DEF, ULTIMA21.CNT, & ULTIMA21.SAV)
  340.     may be corrupted or may be the wrong version. Try renaming these
  341.     files to something else and restarting Ultima 21 Blackjack. The game
  342.     will use its own internal game settings since it will not be able
  343.     to find these files. All three of these files should be exactly the
  344.     same length. If not, there is a problem. 
  345.  
  346.     You should first try renaming the ULTIMA21.DEF and restarting the
  347.     game. 99% of the time this file is causing the problem.
  348.  
  349.     Once the game has started successfully, use the FILE MENU and select 
  350.     the option to save the current settings as the default for a new game.
  351.     This will create a valid (new) ULTIMA21.DEF file on disk.
  352.  
  353.     If you still have problems after trying this procedure, please contact

  355.  
  356. MISSING FILE at STARTUP
  357. =======================
  358.     If you receive a message like "Missing DLL file" or "Missing File", 
  359.     then you most likely do not have the VBRUN300.DLL on your system. 
  360.     It must    be downloaded from your BBS and placed in the Ultima 21 
  361.     directory or in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
  362.  
  363.     If you still have problems after trying this procedure, please contact
  364.     the Author by mail on Compuserve or by phone.
  365.  
  366. SAVING AND RESUMING A GAME
  367. ===========================
  368.     Ultima 21 Blackjack allows you to save a game and resume playing it at
  369.     a later time. This should not be confused with the saving of default 
  370.     settings explained above. You may save as many different games as
  371.     you like and resume playing them at any time in the future.
  372.     
  373.     Saving a game saves everything about the current game so you may 
  374.     resume playing where you left off at a later time. When you save a
  375.     game, it is normally stored in a disk file called "ULTIMA21.SAV".
  376.     However, Ultima 21 Blackjack allows you to save multiple games by 
  377.     allowing you to specify the save file's name. 
  378.  
  379.     To save a game, click on the FILE menu and select either the SAVE 
  380.     or the SAVE AS option. The SAVE option will just save the current
  381.     game to the current game's save file name. Normally this is a file
  382.     called "ULTIMA21.SAV". This works the same as clicking the Save 
  383.     Button on the main table.
  384.  
  385.     If you choose the SAVE AS option, a file name prompt window will 
  386.     appear and you may select a file name you prefer. You will always be
  387.     required to enter a file extension of ".SAV".
  388.  
  389.     At any time, Ultima 21 Blackjack allows you to resume a previously
  390.     saved game by clicking on the FILE menu and selecting the RESUME GAME
  391.     option.    Ultima 21 will prompt you for the name of the save file you
  392.     wish to resume. The default is "ULTIMA21.SAV" but you select another
  393.     save file from the file list displayed. 
  394.  
  395. SETTING UP MULTIPLE CASINOS
  396. ===========================
  397.     Many of you have asked how you can set up various casinos. Ultima 21
  398.     only allows only 1 default settings file that is used when a new game
  399.     is started. The default settings file CANNOT be used to set up the
  400.     rules of multiple casinos. 
  401.  
  402.     Instead, use the save/resume features to do so. Normally, the save/
  403.     resume features are used to save games already in progress so they 
  404.     can be resumed at a later time. However, they can also be used to 
  405.     set up multiple casinos.
  406.  
  407.     To use the save/resume features to set up multiple casinos, follow 
  408.     these steps:
  409.  
  410.         1) Start a completely new game. This will clear the table,
  411.             reset all game settings, and load the default settings
  412.             file. Select the NEW GAME OPTION from the FILE MENU.
  413.  
  414.         2) Set all the playing options as played at your favorite
  415.             casino. When everything is set, use the SAVE AS 
  416.             option from the FILE MENU. Then enter the name
  417.             of the casino followed by the .SAV extension. Be 
  418.             sure the casino name is no more than 8 characters
  419.             long. 
  420.  
  421.         3) Use the RESUME feature from the FILE MENU anytime you
  422.             wish to switch play to one of your saved casinos.
  423.             Just click on the file name saved in step 2, and
  424.             you will begin a new game at that casino.
  425.         
  426.     Since Ultima 21 allows you to save/resume as many games as you wish,
  427.     you can use the steps above to save as many different casinos as you
  428.     wish. 
  429.     
  430.     >>>> BE SURE that step 2 is done immediately after step 1 & before the 
  431.     DEAL BUTTON is pressed. This way when you resume the saved game, you
  432.     will always be starting with a brand new game. 
  433.     
  434. CHANGING PLAYING OPTIONS
  435. ========================
  436.     Ultima 21 Blackjack's menu system (located at the top of the playing 
  437.     table) allows you to change every aspect about the casino options, 
  438.     rules, table limits, player names, bank balances, card deck picture,
  439.     playing strategy, etc...
  440.  
  441.     The following items can be accessed from the FILE menu:
  442.  
  443.         a) Start a new game.
  444.         b) Resume a previously saved game.
  445.         c) Save the current game to disk in the default save file name.
  446.         d) Save the current game to disk in a selected save file name.
  447.         e) Save the current playing settings as the default for a new
  448.            game.
  449.         f) Exit the game.
  450.  
  451.     The following items can be accessed from the VIEW menu:
  452.  
  453.         a) View the players statistics.
  454.         b) View the card count statistics.
  455.         c) Peek at the next few cards to be dealt.
  456.         d) View a deck of 52 cards.
  457.         
  458.     The following items can be changed from the OPTIONS menu:
  459.  
  460.         a) Double down rules.
  461.         b) Surrender rules.
  462.         c) Splitting pairs rules.
  463.         d) Splitting aces rules.
  464.         e) Dealer hitting soft 17 rules.
  465.         f) Insurance options.
  466.         g) Six card hand winner options.
  467.         h) Push Hand Winner.
  468.         i) Hand totals display options.
  469.         j) Dealer hole card display options.
  470.         k) Speed of the game.
  471.         l) Automatic decision help.
  472.  
  473.     The following items can be changed from the SET menu:
  474.  
  475.         a) Table limits.
  476.         b) Table color.
  477.         c) Payoff amount for a blackjack .
  478.         d) Number of decks in play.
  479.         e) Number of players at this table.
  480.         f) Each player's name.
  481.         g) Each player's bank balance.
  482.         h) Card deck picture.
  483.         i) Shuffle point.
  484.         j) Number of cards to bury.
  485.         k) Active Dealer Controls.
  486.         l) Dealer first two cards each hand.
  487.         m) Player's first two cards each hand.
  488.         n) Playing strategy.
  489.  
  490.     When you register your copy of Ultima 21 Blackjack for Windows (tm),
  491.     you will receive a free copy of ULTIMA 21 PRO BLACKJACK FOR WINDOWS.
  492.     This is a non-shareware    version which contains many new features not
  493.     found in the shareware version. Practice Drills and Custom Card 
  494.     Counting Systems are examples of the additional features found
  495.     in the PRO version.
  496.  
  497. QUICK OPTION CHANGES
  498. ====================
  499.     In addition to using the menu system, you may also access and change 
  500.     most of the items on the menus by using the mouse and clicking on 
  501.     certain items on the table. 
  502.  
  503.     Examples:
  504.         Clicking on a player's name, will display the Change a Player's 
  505.         Name Window. 
  506.     
  507.         Clicking on a player's bet will access the Change Bet Window
  508.         for that player. 
  509.  
  510.         Clicking on the "table limits" text in the Game Stats Window 
  511.         will display the Set Table Limits Window.
  512.  
  513.     When the main playing table is visible, the mouse pointer will change
  514.     as it moves to help identify the quick option areas. When the mouse 
  515.     pointer is located over an area that does not support a quick option
  516.     change, or is not allowed at that time, the pointer will display as 
  517.     a circle with a line drawn through it. 
  518.  
  519.     When the mouse cursor is located over an area that supports a quick

  526. CHANGING A PLAYER'S BET
  527. =======================
  528.     When you wish to change a player's bet, there are 4 easy methods 
  529.     to use.    NOTE: Ultima 21 Blackjack for Windows (tm) will only allow
  530.     you to change your bet at the start of a new hand (just like in the
  531.     casinos).
  532.     
  533.     1) Press then BETS Button at the bottom of the screen. This button
  534.     brings up the Enter Player Bet Window for EACH active player at the
  535.     table. This window allows you to enter a new bet from the keyboard.
  536.     This is by far the most flexible way to enter bets for ALL active
  537.     players.
  538.  
  539.     2) Move the mouse cursor over the Player's Bet square on the table
  540.     and press the LEFT Mouse button. This will bring up the Enter Player
  541.     Bet Window for this player only. This is just like option 1 except
  542.     the window only appears one time (for the current player).
  543.  
  544.     3) To the left of each player's bet square are 2 buttons for 
  545.     increasing (+) and decreasing (-) the player's bet. These 2 buttons 
  546.     modify the current bet based on the last "original" or "base" bet. 
  547.     Each time you access the Enter Player Bet Window, this sets "base" 
  548.     bet equal to the bet you enter. From then on, whenever you press 
  549.     the increase or decrease bet buttons for that player, the bet will 
  550.     be increased or decrease by the base bet.
  551.  
  552.     Each player has their "own" base bet and their own increase/decrease
  553.     buttons.
  554.  
  555.     4) To quickly return to the original or base bet, move the mouse
  556.     cursor over the player's bet square & press the RIGHT Mouse button. 
  557.     This will instantly change the player's bet back to the base bet. 
  558.     You could always use the increase/decrease bet buttons to accomplish 
  559.     the same thing, however, this feature is must faster and easier.
  560.         
  561. AUTO DECISION HELP 
  562. ==================
  563.     When this feature is active (see the OPTIONS menu), the dealer will
  564.     help you make playing decisions. That is, the dealer will tell you 
  565.     whether you should hit, stand, double down, or split your hand. 
  566.  
  567.     Auto Help is always based on the current playing strategy in effect 
  568.     at the table. Since you can customize the playing strategy, you also
  569.     control the Auto Help decisions that are displayed or required.
  570.  
  571.     There are two types of Auto Help:
  572.  
  573.         a) Anticipation Help
  574.         b) Correction Help
  575.  
  576.     Anticipation help will display the correct playing strategy for the 
  577.     current player's hand. This will be displayed just below the dealer's
  578.     shoe and will be displayed at all times during the player's hand. This
  579.     feature "anticipates" or displays suggestions before you make each 
  580.     playing decision. You may still play the hand anyway you like since 
  581.     this type of help is only for assistance.
  582.  
  583.     Correction help will maintain a close watch on your play to insure you
  584.     follow the current playing strategy. Instead of displaying the correct
  585.     playing strategy at all times, it will only inform you when you do not
  586.     make the correct playing decision. 
  587.  
  588.         For example, if you click the Hit Button when doubling
  589.         down is the correct decision, a window will appear
  590.         telling you HIT is not correct. 
  591.  
  592.     This feature REQUIRES you to play along with the current playing 
  593.     strategy. 
  594.  
  595.     Another feature available while Auto Help is active is called Auto 
  596.     Focus. An option button on the table has "focus" when it is the 
  597.     default button to be executed when the Enter Key is pressed. 
  598.  
  599.     Auto Focus sets the focus to the correct playing option button (based
  600.     on the current playing strategy). This way all you need to do is 
  601.     press the Enter Key and the correct decision will be made for you. 
  602.     Great for new blackjack players. 
  603.  
  604. CUSTOM PLAYING STRATEGIES
  605. =========================
  606.     Playing strategies are stored in disk files and are identified with 
  607.     the file extension ".SGY". The default strategy is located in the file
  608.     "ULTIMA21.SGY" and is found on the master diskette you received. 
  609.  
  610.     When Ultima 21 Blackjack first starts, it attempts to load the default
  611.     playing strategy tables from the file "ULTIMA21.SGY". Ultima 21 looks
  612.     for this file in the same directory as it was started from. If it 
  613.     cannot locate this file, you will need to access and set the playing 
  614.     strategy tables manually and save them back to disk. This is done by
  615.     clicking on the STRATEGY button or using the SET menu and selecting 
  616.     the PLAYING STRATEGY option.
  617.  
  618.     A single playing strategy file contains two tables of playing options
  619.     that make up a game's Playing Strategy Logic Rules. Ultima 21 allows
  620.     you to control (change) the two tables that make up the game's 
  621.     Playing Strategy Rules. 
  622.  
  623.     The first table is called the BASE PLAY TABLE. It controls all HIT 
  624.     and STAND play decisions and acts as the default table at all times. 
  625.  
  626.     The second table is called the SPECIAL PLAY TABLE. It controls all 
  627.     DOUBLE DOWN, SPLIT, and SURRENDER play decisions. It also allows you
  628.     to enter a "N/A" (not applicable) in a cell. This means you wish the
  629.     BASE PLAY TABLE's decision used for this cell.
  630.  
  631.     NOTE: Ultima 21 always checks the SPECIAL PLAY TABLE first to see if a
  632.     double down, split, or surrender is recommended for the hand. If not,
  633.     it will retrieve the BASE PLAY decision for the hand. 
  634.  
  635.     If Ultima 21 cannot use or find a cell decision from the SPECIAL PLAY
  636.     TABLE, it will switch to the BASE PLAY TABLE where a HIT or STAND 
  637.     decision will always be present. 
  638.  
  639.     Therefore, the BASE PLAY TABLE is used as a default table whenever 
  640.     the SPECIAL PLAY TABLE contains a decision that is either: "N/A" 
  641.     (not applicable) or not allowed (like a double down when the hand 
  642.     contains more than two cards). Remember, if you code a "surrender"
  643.     decision into a SPECIAL PLAY TABLE cell and surrenders are not 
  644.     allowed, the HIT/STAND cell decision in the BASE PLAY TABLE will be 
  645.     used instead.
  646.  
  647.     When Auto Help is active (or when the Hint Button is pressed), Ultima
  648.     21 will check the current strategy tables and determine the correct 
  649.     playing option (hit, stand, double, split, or surrender). The correct
  650.     option it returns will come from either the SPECIAL PLAY TABLE or the
  651.     BASE PLAY TABLE. 
  652.  
  653.     The Set Playing Strategy Window allows you to view and change the 
  654.     various playing options for the current tables. You view and change
  655.     the entries for only one table (BASE or SPECIAL) at a time. To switch 
  656.     to the other table, press the Table Button located in the lower 
  657.     right hand corner of the window. 
  658.  
  659.     If you are on BASE PLAY TABLE, the table button will say "SPECIAL 
  660.     TABLE" and pressing it will take you to the SPECIAL PLAY TABLE. 
  661.  
  662.     When you are on the SPECIAL PLAY TABLE, the table button will say
  663.     BASE TABLE and pressing it will take you to the BASE PLAY TABLE. 
  664.  
  665.     Once all changes to the playing options have been made on both tables, 
  666.     you can save the entire playing strategy to disk. This way, Ultima 21
  667.     can load them automatically each time you start a new game. 
  668.  
  669.     During any game, you may switch to another playing strategy by loading 
  670.     a playing strategy file from disk. This is done by pressing the Load
  671.     Button on the Set Playing Strategy Window. 
  672.  
  673.     Both the save and load features allow you specify a file name and a 
  674.     directory. This allows you to set up and use many different playing
  675.     strategies. Ultima 21 is very flexible and can help you build a 
  676.     winning strategy & practice your card counting and other blackjack
  677.     skills.

  679. CARD COUNTING
  680. =============
  681.     Ultima 21 Blackjack contains three very flexible card counting systems.
  682.     It allows you to customize how card count systems are maintained and
  683.     calculated. Customization is allowed only in the non-shareware version
  684.     called ULTIMA 21 PRO BLACKJACK FOR WINDOWS. Registered users receive
  685.     this version free.
  686.  
  687.     There are three card count systems used in Ultima 21 Blackjack. They 
  688.     are called the Running Count, the True Count, and the User Count.
  689.  
  690.     The Running and True Counts calculations are initially set to the 
  691.     generally accepted formulas recommended by the blackjack "experts". 
  692.  
  693.     Note: Registered users receive a free copy of ULTIMA 21 PRO BLACKJACK.
  694.     This non-shareware version allows you to build and customize your 
  695.     own card counting systems. The User Count is provided to allow you 
  696.     to customize and test you own point-count system. While you may 
  697.     customize the Running and True Counts, most players prefer to leave
  698.     those two count systems alone and use the User Count to test their 
  699.     own systems. This way you can test your system "against" the experts.

  701.     Once you customize the card count systems, you may save them to disk
  702.     in a file called ULTIMA21.CNT. This file should always be stored in
  703.     the same directory as ULTIMA21.EXE in order for Ultima 21 Blackjack
  704.     to automatically load it each time you start the game.

  706.     If you wish to see the three card count systems in action, you may
  707.     elect to have them displayed while hands are being played. This way 
  708.     you can test yourself against the counts as well as see them in 
  709.     action.

  711. GAME SPEED
  712. ==========
  713.     As with all windows applications, the faster your CPU and video card
  714.     are, the better the performance will be.
  715.  
  716.     Ultima 21 Blackjack's default game speed is designed to run on a 
  717.     486-33 CPU with a VGA display. If you experience slow card dealing
  718.     or slow    video performance, try changing the game speed to "very fast".
  719.     This will improve the card dealing speed and improve some of the 
  720.     game's video performance. 
  721.  
  722.     This game is written in Visual Basic for Windows, Version 3.0, by 
  723.     Microsoft. We have taken great care to get the maximum performance
  724.     from Visual Basic. However, some areas of Visual Basic, such as 
  725.     graphics display, are INHERENTLY SLOW and our hands are tied 
  726.     (for now).

  939.         POSSIBLE "OUT OF MEMORY" ERROR SOLUTION

  942.     In the January 24, 1994 issue of Info World, Brian Livingston has
  943.     written in his weekly Windows column on a cure for what he calls
  944.     "the most important cause of Windows instability." The instability
  945.     is reflected in messages such as "Out of memory", "This application
  946.     has violated system integrity", or "Application error" which happen
  947.     even when plenty of memory and resources are available.  It occurred
  948.     to me that this may be related to some of the random problems that
  949.     users are experiencing with WPWin 6.0, so I am summarizing his
  950.     column here.
  951.  
  952.     The solution to the problem is to insert a single line into the [386
  953.     Enhanced] section of your SYSTEM.INI file, reading:
  954.  
  955.                  MaxBPs=768
  956.  
  957.     "MaxBPs" is an abbreviation for "maximum breakpoints." Breakpoints
  958.     are small pieces of memory, about 10 bytes each, that Windows uses
  959.     to save the state of a "virtual machine" (VM).  All Windows
  960.     applications run in a single VM, and each DOS session runs in its
  961.     own VM.  Windows applications may also create additional VMs for
  962.     various reasons.
  963.  
  964.     Normally, Windows allocates 4K of RAM for breakpoints, which means
  965.     that 358 breakpoints are set up when it starts.  Windows immediately
  966.     uses about 200 of these, leaving about 158 remaining.  It is
  967.     possible that in a long Windows sessions these could get used up,
  968.     causing the strange errors described above.
  969.  
  970.     Setting MaxBPs to any number from 359 to 768 uses an additional 4K
  971.     of RAM.  The number could be set higher (up to 1,177) at the cost of
  972.     yet another 4K.
  973.
